On Monday I heard the sad news of the passing of Joan Horner. I lost a friend. The Texas Rangers lost one of their biggest fans. Thousands of women around the world lost a role model and mentor. Andy Horner lost his sweetheart of sixty-four years. She will be missed so much by her loving family and friends.
Perhaps you don’t know who Joan Horner is. Joan and husband Andy started a little direct sales company called Premier Designs Jewelry a quarter century ago. That little venture now generates sales of 350 million dollars a year. But that is not what impressed me about Premier Designs. Lots of companies generate profits and hire people. Andy and Joan wanted to make a difference with their company. They have.
Few companies have had a more concentrated plan to share their financial blessings than Premier Designs. Through the Horner-Premier Foundation the company has supported ministries and missionaries in 45 countries around the world. Locally, to help in the ongoing battle against breast cancer, Premier Designs created its Cure pin in 2004. Since then, the company has donated profits from sale of the Cure pin to fund the fight against breast cancer. In 2007, the company created the Patriotic bracelet and donated all the profits to Operation Homefront, a charitable organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of our troops and the families of fallen soldiers. The impact of this philosophy of giving back has had an amazing and eternal impact.
Every summer thousands of associates travel to annual meetings in Ft.Worth to be motivated, inspired and touched by Joan and Andy. I have had the privilege of writing many of the scripts and skits for the annual rallies. Many in the front office kidded me that it was only because of Joan that I was retained year after year. At least I think they were kidding. I had a real connection with Joan. We both loved baseball and our families and people and Jesus. We tried real hard to keep the correct order. Joan could talk baseball with the best of them. I remember staffers waiting impatiently for us to get going on a script idea while Joan and I discussed the current state of the Texas Ranger’s roster. I am so happy that Joan got to see her beloved Rangers finally make a World Series this fall.
Today I heard a Christmas song from Michael W. Smith. A lyrical phrase struck me in an entirely different way as I remembered the life of Joan Horner. The intent of the lyric is to express that the happiest Christmas is when everyone gets together as family and friends. And that is true. But I listened to this phrase of the song and thought that maybe there is another meaning that my friend Joan is discovering today.
Oh the happiest Christmas,
Is a homecoming Christmas.
Joan Horner is experiencing a homecoming Christmas that we can only imagine. Jesus talked about a homecoming and He was not talking about His upcoming birthday celebration. He talked about the big one. I am scheduled to join in that Homecoming someday and I am happy about that. I am looking forward to it because of a promise that I believe.
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” (John 14, NLT)
I am not anxious to leave this earth but I do look forward to that homecoming someday. Why? It is about relationships. Joan understood that and made it part of her philosophy.
“Our purpose at Premier Designs is to influence peoples lives, not just their pocketbooks, and to build relationships. People are always more important than profits.”
Joan Horner modeled that well. Her life was a life well lived. When you know a life was well lived you feel sadness but no regret that opportunities were lost. A life well lived shows the rest of us what matters. And clearly what matters is not just accomplishment or gain. A life well lived is invested in faith, family and friends. A life well lived values others and changes them. A life well lived serves others and affirms them.
Joan Horner made a very real difference with a life well lived. She was a living example of Paul’s words to Timothy.
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness… (2 Timothy 4, NLT)
All of us receive that crown because of God’s grace. Some do a lot better job than others of demonstrating that grace. Joan was one of those.
Note: You can continue Joan’s legacy of giving by donating to the Horner-Premier Foundation in lieu of flowers. Send your donation to the Horner-Premier Foundation, 1551 Corporate Drive, Irving, TX, 75038.

Dear Dave, Thank you so much for a such a beautiful tribute to my mom. You put into words for us, what is so hard to express. We appreciate you. And we are stil laughing when we see the photos of Mom in those rally skits. You are so creative. Thanks for being her friend. I know she really really liked you! Grateful, Sarah

Great article about a very special person!! I am very blessed to have met Joan. I never knew that there was such beautiful people in the world until I watched Andy and Joan at Rally, but then to meet them in Texas at their home is something I will treasure forever. I wish that I can be half the person that Joan was and then I can make a difference in the world. In meeting her, I know it is humanly possible to be that precious, good and true.

I feel truly blessed to have been a part of Premier for over 11 years. The impact Joan & Andy have had on my life is beyond words. They weren’t perfect, but one could always tell their aim was to be like Jesus.
What sticks out in my mind the most about “Gems from Joan” is her calling to all of us to strive for the ultimate integrity in our lives and businesses. Thank you, Joan, for the encouragement to do the right thing always!

I was very sad to receive the email this morning about Joan’s passing. Your article truly keeps things in their proper perpective. Joan and Andy Horner have affected many, many lives for the better, through Premier, of course, but so much more. They both have lived a Life of Service. She will be missed, but her legacy will live on.
I am grateful for my 8 years under her leadership and encouragement.
Blessings during this Holy Season,

When I read you post it reminds me of why I do what I do. Even though many of us did not have the pleasure of personally knowing Joan, we are fill the utter loss of this amazing woman. She embodies what each of us our striving to be in our business, personal and christian life. I feel blessed in knowing her and Andy as her “Head” of the Premier Family, not just because of who she was. She truly has helped to work for greatness and be the christian woman that Jesus wants us to be.

Joan Horner…a woman after God’s own heart. I had the honor of meeting Joan two times since I became a jeweler two years ago. Joan and Andy always made you feel loved and welcomed no matter you are a new jeweler or you have been with the company for years. She has the heart and soul of God but still very human to pose with us for some silly pictures. Love you Joan and will miss you like many of the jewelers you have touched so personally.

What a wonderful tribute for such a wonderful child of God. I am new to Premier and never had a chance to meet Joan, but the testimony of her love for the Lord Jesus says it all. I know that someday I’ll get to meet her and rejoice with her in heaven. I will pray for her family and loved ones as she will be truly missed.
Lindalee Killian, Premier Designs Jeweler
Although (being a new jeweler) I hadn’t had the pleasure of meeting Joan, I have heard so many wonderful things about her and was so looking forward to meeting her and hearing her speak at this years rally. She and Andy touched my life in so many ways and I am thankful to have Premier in my life. My thoughts and prayers go out to Andy and his family in their time of need and may Joan rest in peace, she will not be forgotten.

As I read your article my heart aches and rejoices at the same time. Thank you very much for writing such a touching article. I started my Premier Designs journey in 1997. What an amazingly blessed journey it has been! It will not be the same without our Queen Mother, Joan Horner, but her legacy will carry on. What an awesome example of a woman after Jesus’ own heart she was! I will cherish the special moments spent with her. Please continue to pray for Andy and family.

Thank you for this beautiful tribute to Joan who truly was a godly woman and great mentor to so many. When I started Premier almost 23 years ago, we were small enough to have private time with Andy and Joan whenever we’d get together for rally. In fact they picked Glenn and me up from the airport and we rode to the cruise ship together the first trip I won in 1989. I just appreciate every moment spent with her and will treasure those memories. I pray now for Andy and the family.

Thank you for writing this … Joan was as I say, ” A swan among women”.
I will forever miss her – just as she missed Mary Crowley of whom she now has been reunited with I am sure. The last rally I attended it flashed through my mind each time she and Andy graced the stage – that any time it could be one or the other, or both that we would see for the last time. We never know how long we have the pillars of faith in our lives – Joan … was a humble servant.
However, I am a tad bit jealous that she beat us there to glory. Bless her precious life, her love for Andy, and her vision that she shared with us jewelers – to live a life of integrity in our businesses, and put things into perspective. It will linger in our minds and in everything we do with our Premier future.
Thank you Lord, for Joan, for Andy, and for a one in ten zillion example such as she was … heaven won’t come to soon for us all to be together again.

This is an amazing article and so true!!! I have been in Premier for a little over 2 years, and I can remember my first time seeing and listening to Joan on stage at Pittsburg, Pa. for the first time.. She spoke about all the places in the bible that talk about smiling, laughter and happiness.. I had never even heard of this before.. She has an everlasting effect on me and my heart.. That was the moment that I knew I was meant to be with Premier Designs Jewelry! She had a way of making us feel like she was personally speaking to each and everyone of us, as she delivered her speech, and she was!! I would like to send a heart felt hug to her family who must be missing her terribly but knowing that she is where she needed to be.. God bless the Horner family and thank you for all you have done for some many people Joan, you will now be able to truly watch over all of us on a daily basis..You lead all of us by example!! Thank you!

What a wonderful lady Joan Horner was! She will be greatly missed. Thank you for your article. I have been a Premier Designs jeweler for 9 years and am so thankful for the character and Christian leadership of Joan and Andy. Knowing that Joan had a close personal relationship with Jesus Christ gives us a hope and peace. But I beg to differ with you. Our Joan is not lost… we know exactly where she is! The Bible says “Precious in the sight of God is the death of one of His saints.” Joan’s must have been especially precious. She certainly was.

Thank you for putting into words our feelings for our precious Joan. The words “well done thou good and faithful servant” will never apply to anyone more appropriately than to Joan and Andy Horner. They have taught us how to live life the way it is meant to be lived. We continue to pray for the entire Horner family.

Thank you for such beautiful words, God has blessed you, as well as all of us to be a part of this amazing Company that Andy and Joan sought this vision for. I am truly saddened but I think Joan has been called home, I just want everyone to pray for Andy and his family and this amazing Company to continue to doing Gods work as I know they will do, and we will also continue to do. Thank You

Joan will be missed. She was such a beautiful woman inside and out. She had a way of just making you want to love more and serve more. She was and will continue to be an example of a Godly woman whose impact on the lives of so many will never be known this side of heaven. It makes me think of that song Thank You For Giving To The Lord. She was such a giver. I pray for those closest to her. I did not know her personally and yet I miss her. I know her family and friends will miss her very much.

It is sad, for us, that one of the angels on earth has been called home. Joan has been an inspiration to thousands of women across the US and I am one. I am sorry I did not get the chance to meet her personally but have been inspired by her for the last 8 years. My heart goes out to Andy and Tim and the rest of the family but I truly believe Joan will be watching over them and the rest of us and sharing the Grace she has found with the Lord. Thank you Andy for sharing her with us and know we pray for you and for the Lord to ease your sorrow. God be with you, comfort you, and lift your soul.

Thank you for this article that expresses some of the thoughts and feelings of all 40,000 jewelers across this nation. Joan was an amazing example and has left an emptiness in our hearts. I can’t imagine rally in January and her not on stage. A very beautiful lady inside and out. She left a legacy and was such an example for all of us. My desire is to do follow in her footsteps and touch mankind as her and Andy have for so many years. God bless the Horners, they have definitely been a blessing to others.
We miss you Joan!

WOW, what an amazing tribute to Joans Life! The saddness that we all feel is real and burdens our hearts because we will miss her. But, we all know that Joan is wearing the “Real Crown” now! Our Queen mother, that has given her Grace to Premier and to So many Misssions accross our world, is with Her Heavenly Father. Knowing that is why there is a sense of Peace in my heart. My Prayers go out to Andy, and all of her children and grandchildren! She will be missed forever!

I served with Premier Designs for almost 3 years. Premier allowed me to further my career and become an LVN and am now working towards my RN with plans to graduate in May of 2011. I always dreamed of being able to provide comfort and compassion to others and with Premier it has given me that opportunity. Thank you so much Mrs. Joan for all you have done to encourage me during this time. You have been such an inspiration to many and your legacy will live on. My prayers go out to Mr. Andy and the Horner Family. May God comfort you and provide you with peace during this time in knowing Mrs. Joan is the newest “Gem” through the Golden Gates of Heaven!!

Wow! When I read this my heart sank because I just found out and could not beleive it that it was who I thought it was. When I met her she was so sweet and gave me such a hug just like I was her daughter. She complimented me on how pretty I was and she said “never give up and always keep God first no matter what” I think she knew somehow(God told her) I was struggling and getting that book that I won at the siminar was just icing on the cake since I have a personal message from her. I was blessed just that one meeting and yes she is someone one I realy look up to and respect as a Godly woman. My heart goes out to all her family and her husband who also is very special and made me feel like one of the family. Something else, everyone she meets I know she makes them feel like they are the most special person in the world, that is gift and she was so open to what God wanted for her and her family was an inspiration and priviledge to meet such a person on this earch. God Bless Andy and the famil always and forecver . I too will miss her and her messages on the updates. In Christ Name Love: Cynthia Haning

My wife has been a Premier Jeweler for the past 15 years and from the start she spoke highly of both Joan & Andy. In many ways they remind me of my parents. My fondest memory of Joan came many years ago when my wife was a new jeweler. Joan and Andy had traveled to South Georgia for a 2 day get together with jewelers in the area. The first night we were meeting in the lobby area of the hotel, and I had a terrible headache. Joan and Andy took time to lay hands on me and pray for me. The next morning we met in the hallway on the way down to breakfast and they asked me if I was feeling better. This had a profound effect on how I viewed this company and these leaders. They were not only great leaders, but even greater servants. They were servants to others and more importantly servants of God. May God bless the Horner and Premier family.

Thank you for these wonderful words about an ordinary person who said “Yes” to Jesus and by allowing him to work through her life did Extraordinary things that enriched the lives of millions! While our beloved “Queen Mother” has passed on to sit at the feet of her King, she has left behind a legacy of love in each and every person she touched…..whether you met her in person, or not you have received it…..she really did love each and every jeweler! Yes, she will be missed, but never forgotten….I do remember one time after she had been ill, she had told us years ago at a Designer Meeting that “The Lord can’t take me home until the Texas Rangers make it to the World Series!” I have been retired from Premier for over two years now, and I thought about that statement she made as I watched the World Series this past October and smiled! Joan finally got her wish! Happy Homecoming Joan!

Thank you for sharing this article with the world. Those in premier know just how special Joan was and will always be. I had the please of meeting her face to face in July at my first rally. I was only on the business for about 6 weeks and she had already made such an impact in my life. I was looking forward to receiving my Joan rookie team baseball in January and having my picture take with her on stage :(. I am going to miss her very much but I know she is watching over us and I hope that her jewelers carry on her purpose and philosophy and we make her proud!

Joan Horner will be missed by all of us. I have cried over the past few days and think back over all of the rallies I have attended over the past 11 years. Listening to her and Andy always was an inspiration. I hope we all try to leave a legacy as she has. Heaven gained a special angel and I know she is looking down on all of her gems!! We love you Joan and Andy!! I can’t begin to tell you the impact Premier has had on my life!

Wow, Dave…Thank you so much for writing such a touching article which depicts the woman Joan Horner was. And although we are saddened by the loss of our mentor and “Queen Mother”, we are so excited for her to be with her “King”.
Andy and Joan have been caring and sharing their experiences and love of the Lord with so many over the past 25 years and although “the company” is Premier Designs Jewelry…that is merely our product…Premier goes way beyond that…and one of Joan’s messages if not her main message of “Keeping It Personal” is what has helped this company be so successful and made it so different from all the others.
Her legacy is a beautiful one and we will strive to make her proud by continuing the pursuit of touching lives through home shows.
Today in church our priest was telling the story of Mary and how she was an “Absolute Original”, chosen by God…when he said this I immediately thought of Joan, for she too was an “Absolute Original” chosen to mentor to us her jewelers who in turn mentor to our hostesses and customers.
Thank you Joan Horner for your untiring desire to be the best steward you could be for the Lord.

Thanks so much for writing this in Memory of Our Queen Mother, Mrs. Joan Horner. She had a smile that would light up a room! I always loved when Mr. Horner would sing to her…she would blush and smile because he always did it! I had the honor of meeting her on 4 occasions. And I feel very blessed that I was able to share the meeting of Joan and Andy with my biggest supporter beside God with my husband. Having him be able to meet the people who created the opportunity to help us provide for not only our families but families across the United States, and the ministries in other countries. She was a great inspiration and mentor to many ladies…us jewelers always strived to follow in her footsteps…She motivated me to give more and to help whenever I could. Myself, like many women before making any decision always think “What would Joan and Andy do?” By doing this we have helped many people bring meaning into their lives, food on some tables, and teach our beautiful children GREAT morals and values. I love what Joan and Andy have done to build Premier to what it is and what it will always be. Focusing on helping our Heavenly Father with his works on Earth. I know Joan you are smiling down on us as we will strive to continue to help all the people we can. I look forward to many years with Premier and one day I hope to see you again as I come through the Heavenly Doors I pray that your one of the first people I see when I arrive. I will miss my yearly hugs but I have faith in God. I love you Joan and you will be greatly Missed!

Thanks so much for such wonderful words about such a wonderful lady. She has touched the hearts of so many of us in Premier. Without her, we would have been different people. In the 20 years that I’ve known her, she has always been a lady who served. We know she is in a better place but we will miss her dearly. She will be in our hearts forever, until we too meet her in heaven.

I’ve been a Premier Jeweler since 1996 & have had several opportunities my husband & I both to be with Joan as well as Andy. What a privilege to have known her. She really did touch so many lives. I’ll alway’s remember she alway’s told us to “Keep It Personal”, because she truly did practice what she “preached”. And she alway’s encouraged honesty in our business dealing’s. I’m so glad that we have picture’s with her & Andy, we will cherish forever, & my baseball that she signed.
As we celebrate her Home Going we lift Andy & The Horner Family up in Prayer.

I have been in Premier since 2004. I love Joan’s integrity; I treasured her wisdom as a great Women of God, although I have never met her she did have a special place in my heart! I will miss her. What I love about Premier the most is the biblical foundation and how giving we are. I wasn’t saved when I started Premier and now that I am I appreciate and love Premier so much more than I did in the past! Now I can minister to my hostess/friends as a strong Women of God. When I think of Joan, I feel warmth inside because she showed such Righteousness and faith with God. She is someone I always remember because she was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, faithful servant and our Queen Bee! I love you Joan!

Joan Horner blessed the lives of everyone including mine. She was and is an example to each of us on how we should live our lives, serving others, putting others above ourselves, and sharing the love of God. It’s truly been an honor to have known her and to be a part of a company that she poured her heart and soul into. If we would all model our lives after Joan Horner what a positive difference it would make in the world in which we live.

One of the highlights of being a part of the Premier Designs company for over 21 years has been my relationship with Joan Horner. She was involved with so many of us in a personal way–and even wrote a treasured devotional book entitled “Keeping It Personal.” She inspired each of us to grow in our love for our Lord and to build relationships with others through service. It was a divine blessing in my life to have known her.

Thank you for writing this article. I have been with Premier since May and never had the chance to meet her. I joined her Rookie Team a few months and was looking forward to meeting this amazing women that I’ve heard so much about.
When I heard of her passing I was very sad, my husband was sad. This artile brought me to tears.
In my short time with Premier I feel her loss and my heart goes out to all those who are mourning her dealth and celebrting her life.
Thank you Joan for the legacy you left behind and for giving me the opportunity to be apart of something so specical and worthy of God’s Praise.
The devotional for today was “Encouragement That Fits” It quotes Proverbs 12:25 “Anxious hearts are very heavy, but a word of encouragement does wonders”
Lindsay
That was beautiful. I am starting my 4th year in Premier and feel like I lost a great friend. Even though we only met face to face a couple times, Joan made you feel like you were family. I remember having dinner at Joan and Andy’s home and how they made us feel like royalty. They wouldn’t let us do anything. They were the ultimate servers. That’s what classifies an awesome leader. Thanks for your beautiful tribute to a beautiful God’s girl. We will see her again some day. I just picture her dancing hand in hand with the precious woman, Mary Crowley, who shared Jesus with her…at the feet of Jesus.

Thank you for these heartfelt words about a dear woman of God! I never had the opportunity to meet Joan face-to-face but I’m sure if I had, we would have one of those long conversations about our beloved Texas Rangers. I couldn’t help but think of Joan in October when they finally made it to the World Series. More importantly, I would have thanked her for their role in missions and for making us all feel like we were special to her. Even in a room with 10,000 other jewelers, she made me feel as though she were speaking directly to me. I cannot wait to meet her at my own Homecoming someday!

I Loved what you wrote! Thank you for sharing on Joans beautiful life. I’m sure you were a very treasured friend. Joan will be missed. She touched so many lives. It’s amazing to me, how much her passing has actually effected me. I’ve only gotten to meet her once (litterally face to face) I asked if I could hug her…Of course she said yes! I am so proud of that baseball she gave me for Joans Rookie Team! I think to myself, Premier really is a “People Business” I feel like I was part of their immediate family. They let us into their lives always saying “Keep it personal” Thank you Joan for making each of us feel so important, loved, and needed. This is the same scripture my mother read to me to help me with Joans passing.
